Worked example: for the AP 4, 7, 10, …, the first term is a = 4 and the common difference is d = 3. The nth term formula is aₙ = a + (n − 1)d, so a₁₂ = 4 + (12 − 1) × 3 = 37. The formula page tells you which values to substitute; the working is the same for every chapter.

Common Class 10 Maths formula mistakes to avoid
These four formula swaps appear often in board-exam working. Each one has a simple correction.
- The nth term of an AP vs the sum of n terms: the nth term formula gives one term; the sum formula gives a total. Read the question to see which one it asks for.
- Distance formula vs section formula: distance measures how far apart two points are; the section formula finds the coordinates of a point dividing a line segment. Choose by what the question wants.
- Pythagoras theorem on a non-right-angled triangle: Pythagoras works only when one angle is 90°. For other triangles use similarity criteria instead.
- Ignoring the discriminant: for ax² + bx + c = 0, b² − 4ac > 0 means two distinct real roots, = 0 means one repeated root, and < 0 means no real roots.
