How to Use These NCERT Books for Class 12 Home Science Preparation
Class 12 Home Science does not follow a single linear progression like Physics or Chemistry. Instead, the two parts divide the subject into thematic strands. Here is how to approach them efficiently:
- Confirm your school’s elective group first. Ask your teacher whether your school emphasises the Food and Nutrition strand (Part I, Chapters 2–5) or the Textiles and Fashion strand (Part II, Chapters 1–3). This will tell you which chapters to study in depth versus which to revise more lightly.
- Read Part I Chapters 2–5 as a sequence. Nutrition → Public Health → Processing → Quality form a logical chain: you learn what nutrients are, why communities need them, how food is processed safely, and how quality is assured. Study them together so the concepts build.
- Read Part II Chapters 1–3 as a sequence. Fibres → Design → Care also flow logically: you learn what textiles are made of, how designers use them, and how institutions maintain them.
- Study Chapters 6–7 of each part as standalone units. Human Development and Family Studies (Part I, Ch. 6), Management of Support Services (Part I, Ch. 7), and Communication/PR (Part II, Chs. 6–7) are independent topics that can be revised separately without needing to reread earlier chapters.
- Check the CBSE official syllabus for the exact unit weightage. This page does not publish a marks table for Home Science because verified unit-wise marks are not on hand. Before you allocate revision time, download the current CBSE curriculum document to see which units carry the most marks on the exam.
CBSE Class 12 Home Science: Unit Weightage Is Not Independently Verified
Unlike subjects such as Physics or Chemistry, where the CBSE provides a detailed marks distribution table, the unit weightage for Class 12 Home Science is not confirmed in our records. To avoid guessing and wasting revision time on the wrong topics, we do not publish a marks table here.
Instead, visit the official CBSE website to download the current-session curriculum document for your Home Science course. The official syllabus will show the exact marks per unit and the question types (essay, practical, project) you can expect on exam day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Human Ecology and Family Sciences Part I enough for CBSE Class 12 Home Science, or do I need Part II as well?
You need both parts. CBSE prescribes Part I and Part II as two complementary textbooks. Part I covers nutrition, food science, human development, and support services. Part II covers textiles, fashion, and communication. The exam expects knowledge from both, so skipping Part II will leave gaps in your preparation.
Why does the NCERT PDF for Chapter 5 of Part I show an incomplete title like “Food Quality and”?
The official NCERT PDF for Part I, Chapter 5 carries the truncated title “Food Quality and” as published by NCERT itself. This is not a download error. The full title and complete chapter content are inside the PDF — download it from the link above to see the actual chapter title and all topics covered.
Why is Chapter 5 of Part II listed only as “Chapter” with no proper title?
Part II, Chapter 5 also has an incomplete title in the official NCERT registry as simply “Chapter.” This appears to be a cataloguing anomaly at NCERT. To find out the real chapter title and content, download the PDF from the verified link — the full title and chapter details are inside the file.
Are the NCERT Class 12 Home Science books available in Hindi medium?
Our records show only the English-medium edition of both Part I and Part II verified on ncert.nic.in. If a Hindi-medium edition exists, it is not yet confirmed in our registry. Check the NCERT official textbook portal to see all available languages for your state and medium.
How many chapters are in each part of the Class 12 Home Science NCERT book?
Both parts have 7 chapters each. Part I has 7 chapters on nutrition, food science, and human development. Part II has 7 chapters on textiles, fashion, and communication. Together, the two books contain 14 chapters.
Where can I check the exact CBSE marks distribution for Class 12 Home Science?
