  • Light – Reflection and Refraction — the mirror formula and lens formula, magnification, refractive index and the power of a lens. This is the chapter for reflection and refraction numericals.
  • The Human Eye and the Colourful World — power of accommodation, defects of vision and their lens correction, dispersion through a prism, atmospheric refraction and scattering. Mostly conceptual, with lens power calculations.
  • Electricity — Ohm’s law, resistance and resistivity, series and parallel combinations, the heating effect of current, electric power and energy. The numerical-heavy chapter.
  • Magnetic Effects of Electric Current — magnetic field lines, force on a current-carrying conductor, Fleming’s rules, solenoid and electromagnet, electric motor and generator, domestic circuits. Application-based, with fewer standalone numericals.

Two warnings before you start working with these formulas:

  • Sign conventions matter. u, v and f follow the Cartesian sign convention in both the mirror formula and the lens formula — and the convention differs between mirrors and lenses. Always read a formula together with its sign convention on the chapter page.
  • “Power” is ambiguous. The word means two different things in this book: lens power in dioptres in the Light and Human Eye chapters, and electric power in watts in the Electricity chapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Class 10 physics chapter has the most formulas?

Electricity and Light – Reflection and Refraction. Both carry the bulk of the formula-based numericals in the board exam. The Human Eye and Magnetic Effects chapters are mostly conceptual, with a few calculations.

Is the Human Eye chapter important for formula questions?

It has few standalone formulas. The main calculation is lens power for correcting myopia and hypermetropia; most questions test dispersion, scattering and the power of accommodation as concepts.

Are these the same as the Class 10 Science chapters?

These four are the physics portion of Class 10 Science. The other Science chapters — chemical reactions, life processes, and so on — are covered in the Science section, not in this formulas hub.
