Two Textbooks, One Subject: How Class 12 Home Science Is Organised
Class 12 Home Science is one subject taught from two books. Part I holds the chapters on work, nutrition, food and human development. Part II holds the chapters on fabric, fashion, institutions, hospitality, consumer protection and communication. That split gives the syllabus four thematic clusters, useful when you know the topic but not the chapter number:
- Food and nutrition — Part I chapters 2 to 5, from clinical dietetics to food safety.
- Work and human development — Part I chapters 1, 6 and 7, from choosing a career to caring for children, youth and the elderly.
- Fabric, fashion and institution care — Part II chapters 1 to 3, from design to institutional laundry.
- Hospitality, consumer protection and communication — Part II chapters 4 to 7.
Watch the numbering. Chapter numbers restart at 1 in Part II. Chapter 4 of Part I is Food Processing and Technology, while Chapter 4 of Part II is Hospitality Management — so a chapter is only unambiguous with its part label. Check the part before you trust a chapter number.
Two food chapters are easiest to confuse. Food Processing and Technology is about transforming and preserving food: why it spoils, how processing prevents it, and how foods are classified. Food Quality and Food Safety is about hazards, adulteration and standards: toxicity versus hazard, food infection versus intoxication, and food standards rising from company level to Codex, ISO and WTO.
Both books are published in rationalised NCERT editions. You can check the current Human Ecology and Family Sciences Part I and Part II textbooks on the NCERT textbook portal.
How to Use These Notes for Revision
One path works for most chapters: read the one-line description in the directory, open the notes page, and work through it in order. Keep the worked examples for the end and treat them as self-tests — try the calculation yourself before you read the solution.
Four worked examples are built to be self-tests:
- Costing supplementary foods under a serving budget — Public Nutrition and Health.
- Classifying foods and costing a product — Food Processing and Technology.
- Calculating linen stock and making stain decisions — Care and Maintenance of Fabrics in Institutions.
- Drawing a croquis by head units — Fashion Design and Merchandising.
If you are revising the whole subject, build vocabulary first. Start with the definition-heavy chapters such as Food Quality and Food Safety and Design for Fabric and Apparel, then move to the application chapters with practical techniques — tie and dye, batik, block printing and the stain-removal tables.
If you are revising more than one subject, the Class 12 CBSE notes hub is where you pick the next one.
What’s Inside the Notes Pages
The notes pages linked below work as revision tools rather than textbook restatements. Where a chapter works with definitions, the notes page condenses them into a definitions table — Food Quality and Food Safety tables the terms behind toxicity versus hazard, food infection versus intoxication and adulteration.
Where numbers matter, the key data points are pulled out, such as the numbers to remember in Public Nutrition and Health and the key numbers in Food Processing and Technology. Where a calculation appears, a worked example walks through it step by step.
Where a chapter names careers, the notes page lists them. Taken together, the subject reads as a chain from concept to profession — from public nutrition and the food industry to fabric and apparel design, fashion and commercial laundry services.
Work, Livelihood and Career, the opening chapter of Part I, sets up that chain by asking how a person chooses and prepares for a career.
Frequently Asked Questions About Class 12 Home Science Notes
Which Class 12 Home Science chapters cover food and nutrition?
Four chapters, all in Part I: Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics (chapter 2), Public Nutrition and Health (chapter 3), Food Processing and Technology (chapter 4) and Food Quality and Food Safety (chapter 5). Together they run from diet in illness, through public health nutrition, to food processing and food safety.
Why does Class 12 Home Science have two Chapter 1s?
Because the subject is taught from two separate NCERT books, and numbering restarts at 1 in Part II. Chapter 1 of Part I is Work, Livelihood and Career, while Chapter 1 of Part II is Design for Fabric and Apparel. Always check the part label before relying on a chapter number.
How do I find a specific topic inside the Class 12 Home Science chapters?
Use the thematic clusters: food and nutrition, work and human development, fabric, fashion and institution care, and hospitality, consumer protection and communication. A topic like food safety points straight to the food cluster in Part I, while a topic like block printing points to the fabric and design chapters in Part II.
What is the difference between Human Ecology and Family Sciences Part I and Part II?
Part I holds the nutrition, work and human development chapters — clinical dietetics, public health nutrition, food processing and safety, early childhood care, and services for children, youth and the elderly. Part II holds the design, institutions, consumer and communication chapters — fabric and fashion, institutional laundry, hospitality, consumer protection, and the communication chapters.
