Class 11 Chemistry Notes – Chapter-wise CBSE Revision

This page collects the Class 11 Chemistry notes for the current CBSE syllabus: the complete rationalised NCERT chapter list, what each chapter teaches, and the status of every notes page. All nine chapters are examinable in the same year — six from NCERT Chemistry Part I and three from Part II. The chapter pages are being published, and the status column in the directory shows where each one stands.

Class 11 Chemistry Chapters: Complete NCERT List

This is the complete rationalised chapter list of Class 11 chemistry, straight from the official NCERT textbook download page. Six chapters make up Part I and three make up Part II, and every one of them is examinable this year.

The list below says what each chapter teaches; the table that follows shows the full directory with the status of each notes page.

  • Chapter 1: Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry. The language and arithmetic of chemistry: SI units, the mole concept, molar mass, percentage composition, empirical and molecular formulae, and stoichiometry. Every calculation in later chapters builds on the mole.
  • Chapter 2: Structure of Atom. What an atom is made of — subatomic particles, Bohr’s model, and the quantum mechanical picture of the electron. Quantum numbers, the aufbau principle and Hund’s rule decide how electrons fill shells and subshells.
  • Chapter 3: Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties. The modern periodic table built from electronic configurations, split into the s, p, d and f blocks. It explains how atomic radius, ionisation enthalpy, electron gain enthalpy and electronegativity trend across periods and down groups.
  • Chapter 4: Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure. How and why atoms bond: ionic and covalent bonds, Lewis structures, VSEPR theory and hybridisation for predicting molecular shapes, and hydrogen bonding.
  • Chapter 5: Thermodynamics. The energy rules of chemistry: system and surroundings, internal energy and enthalpy, heat capacity, the first and second laws, and Gibbs energy as the verdict on whether a reaction is spontaneous.
  • Chapter 6: Equilibrium. What happens when reactions settle: the equilibrium constant, Le Chatelier’s principle, and ionic equilibria — weak acids and bases, pH, buffer solutions, the common ion effect and solubility product.
  • Part II, Chapter 1: Redox Reactions. Electron transfer chemistry: oxidation numbers, oxidising and reducing agents, and balancing redox equations by the oxidation number and ion-electron methods.
  • Part II, Chapter 2: Organic Chemistry – Some Basic Principles and Techniques. The toolkit for every organic chapter: tetravalence and catenation, classification and IUPAC nomenclature, isomerism, inductive and resonance effects, and purification and quantitative analysis techniques.
  • Part II, Chapter 3: Hydrocarbons. Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and aromatic hydrocarbons: preparations, addition reactions, Markovnikov’s rule, ozonolysis, and the resonance stability of benzene.

How to Use These Class 11 Chemistry Notes

These Class 11 Chemistry notes sit inside the Class 11 hub of the CBSE Notes library. Follow the study order below for a first pass, then use the directory whenever you need one specific chapter.

Suggested study order

Part I and Part II form one syllabus, but the chapters build on each other. Take them in this order:

  1. Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry — start here because the mole concept is the base of every later numerical chapter.
  2. Structure of Atom — gives you the electronic configurations that periodicity and bonding depend on.
  3. Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties — needs Chapter 2’s configurations before group trends make sense.
  4. Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure — uses configuration and periodicity to explain why molecules take the shapes they do.
  5. Thermodynamics — the energy bookkeeping of reactions; needs the mole arithmetic from Chapter 1.
  6. Equilibrium — applies the same arithmetic to reactions that do not go to completion.
  7. Redox Reactions — electron transfer chemistry and the bridge into Class 12 electrochemistry.
  8. Organic Chemistry – Some Basic Principles and Techniques — the self-contained organic track: nomenclature and electronic effects first.
  9. Hydrocarbons — applies the organic toolkit to the simplest compound families.

The last two chapters are the organic pair from Part II — a separate, self-contained track. You can study them once nomenclature and electronic effects are clear, even while the inorganic chapters are still in progress.

Question style by chapter

The Class 11 chemistry paper mixes calculations and theory, but the mix differs by chapter. This table is qualitative, not a marks breakdown:

A warning about older chapter lists

Older chapter lists are out of date and still name chapters no longer in the NCERT book. The pre-rationalisation edition had 14 chapters; the current rationalised NCERT has the 9 shown in the directory above.

Any list that still includes States of Matter, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, p-Block Elements or Environmental Chemistry is from the older textbook — match your notes and practice to the 9-chapter directory.

The exam follows the same two NCERT books. For the official Class 11 chemistry syllabus and practicals, check the official CBSE academic curriculum page. When Class 11 is done, continue with the Class 12 chemistry notes, where redox and organic basics grow into electrochemistry and reaction mechanisms.

What Each Class 11 Chemistry Notes Page Contains

Chapter pages are being published, and the status column in the directory shows progress. Each chapter page that goes live follows the same structure:

  • Key definitions and laws in bold at first mention, so a quick scan finds them.
  • Every formula with its units and the conditions under which it holds.
  • Solved numericals with full working, step by step.
  • NCERT exercise answers for that chapter.
  • A common-mistakes list: the errors students make most and how to avoid them.
  • A one-page revision summary at the end of the page.

During revision, open the chapter page directly when you need a formula or a definition instead of re-reading the whole textbook chapter. That single habit saves the most time.

Class 11 Chemistry Notes — Frequently Asked Questions

How many chapters are there in Class 11 Chemistry for CBSE?

Nine: six in NCERT Chemistry Part I and three in Part II. Are NCERT Chemistry Part I and Part II both asked in the Class 11 exam?

Yes. They are two books of one syllabus, and all nine chapters are examinable in the same year.

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry (mole and stoichiometry), Thermodynamics (enthalpy and Gibbs energy) and Equilibrium (equilibrium constants, pH and buffers). Redox Reactions also carries oxidation-number and balancing work.

Some sites list 14 chapters for Class 11 chemistry. Why is your list only 9?

NCERT rationalised the syllabus in the 2023-24 session. Chapters such as States of Matter, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, p-Block Elements and Environmental Chemistry are no longer in the Class 11 textbook, so prepare from the 9-chapter list above.
