How to Use These MCQs for Board Exam Revision

Guessing an option rarely builds real understanding. Work through each MCQ using this method instead:

  1. Read the question stem twice before looking at the options — many marks are lost to misreading, not lack of knowledge.
  2. Eliminate options that are obviously wrong first; this narrows your choice to two before you even calculate.
  3. Verify the remaining option against the actual concept or formula — do not pick an answer because it “sounds right”.
  4. For assertion-reason pairs, check the assertion and the reason separately: is the reason itself a true statement, and does it actually explain the assertion?
  5. Time yourself at roughly 40-45 seconds per MCQ, which matches the pace needed for Section A of the board paper.

Sample Solved MCQ: Working Out an Ohm’s Law Numerical

Electricity is one of the more numeric-heavy chapters in this book, so here is a worked example of the kind of numerical MCQ you should expect.

Question: A resistor carries a current of 0.6 A when a potential difference of 9 V is applied across it. What is its resistance, and what current will flow if the voltage is doubled to 18 V, with resistance unchanged?

  • (a) 10 Ω; 1.8 A — wrong. Dividing 9 by 0.6 does not give 10; this option comes from an arithmetic slip.
  • (b) 15 Ω; 1.2 A — correct. Using Ohm’s law, resistance R = V/I = 9 ÷ 0.6 = 15 ohm. At 18 V, the new current is I = V/R = 18 ÷ 15 = 1.2 A.
  • (c) 15 Ω; 2.4 A — wrong. The resistance is right, but this assumes current quadruples when voltage doubles, which contradicts Ohm’s law (I is directly proportional to V, not V squared).
  • (d) 5.4 Ω; 3.33 A — wrong. This comes from multiplying V and I instead of dividing, giving a resistance value with no physical basis here.

The working rule to remember: resistance stays constant unless the resistor itself changes, so current always scales in direct proportion to voltage.

Common Mistakes Students Make in Science MCQs

These errors show up across Chemistry, Biology and Physics MCQs, often from rushing rather than not knowing the concept:

  • Confusing reaction types — for example, mistaking a displacement reaction for a decomposition reaction because both involve a compound breaking apart or reforming.
  • Sign or unit errors in numericals, such as forgetting to convert centimetres to metres in lens and mirror problems, which throws off the final magnitude by a factor of 100.
  • Picking an assertion-reason option based on the assertion alone, without checking whether the reason actually explains it — a true assertion paired with an unrelated true reason is still not option (a).
  • Misreading words like “NOT” or “except” in case-based question stems, which flips the correct choice entirely.

How Class 10 Science MCQs Fit the CBSE Board Exam Pattern

In the CBSE Class 10 Science paper, Section A is typically made up of objective-type questions worth 1 mark each, including assertion-reason and case-based items. These are scored strictly on the exact correct option — there is no partial credit for a half-right answer.

Because of this strict scoring, treat chapter MCQs as a warm-up for accuracy and speed, not a replacement for long-answer practice. You still need to write full steps and diagrams for Section B and beyond.
