Here is what each chapter page actually covers:
- Chapter 1: Chemical Reactions and Equations — balancing equations by hit-and-trial and telling apart the five reaction types (combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement and redox) that show up most in exams.

How to Use These Notes for Board Revision
Some chapters build directly on an idea from an earlier one, so revising out of order usually means re-learning a rule halfway through a chapter. A few pairs worth noting: Chemical Reactions and Equations should come before Acids, Bases and Salts, since both depend on writing and balancing equations correctly. Light – Reflection and Refraction should come before
The Human Eye and the Colourful World, because the eye chapter reuses the same refraction rules and the New Cartesian Sign Convention without explaining them again. And Electricity should come before Magnetic Effects of Electric Current, because the magnetic field around a current-carrying wire only makes sense once current itself is clear.
It also helps to revise one unit in a single sitting — all of Chemistry, then all of Biology, and so on — instead of jumping between units. Sign conventions, definitions and diagram labels differ sharply from one unit to the next, and switching between them mid-session is where recall slips happen.
What You Will Find Inside Each Chapter Note
Every chapter page in this set follows the same layout. Concepts are explained in plain language first, not lifted from the textbook wording. Where the NCERT chapter has a diagram — the reflex arc in Control and Coordination, ray diagrams in Light – Reflection and Refraction, or solenoid field lines in Magnetic Effects of Electric Current
— the note carries a labelled version of it. Formulas are stated with their units, not just the symbol. Each page also ends with a short note on the mistake students in that specific chapter tend to make, not a generic warning that applies to every chapter equally.
Mistakes Students Make When Switching Between Chapters
A few errors show up again and again exactly where two chapters meet:
- Carrying the New Cartesian Sign Convention from Light – Reflection and Refraction into The Human Eye and the Colourful World too loosely, or dropping it altogether when the eye chapter still expects signed distances.
- Mixing up the right-hand thumb rule, used for the direction of the magnetic field around a current-carrying conductor in Magnetic Effects of Electric Current, with Fleming’s left-hand rule, used for the direction of force on that conductor. One rule gives field direction; the other gives force direction — they answer different questions.
- Writing a skeletal equation in Chemical Reactions and Equations and naming the reaction type before balancing it fully. Examiners deduct marks for an unbalanced equation even when the reaction type identified is correct.

How many chapters are there in the CBSE Class 10 Science syllabus?
Thirteen. Chapters 1-4 are Chemistry, Chapters 5-8 are Biology, Chapters 9-12 are Physics, and Chapter 13 (Our Environment) closes the year.

Which chapter should I revise first before the board exam?
There is no single fixed order, but within a unit, revise the chapter that other chapters depend on first — Chemical Reactions and Equations before Acids, Bases and Salts, and Light – Reflection and Refraction before The Human Eye and the Colourful World, for the reasons explained above.
Is Our Environment (Chapter 13) as important as the numerical chapters like Electricity?
It carries fewer numerical questions than Electricity, but it is still a full chapter in the syllabus and is tested through food chain, food web and energy-flow questions. Do not skip it on the assumption that only numerical chapters matter for marks.
Do these notes replace the NCERT textbook or only support it?
They support it. The notes explain the same concepts in plain language with worked examples and common-mistake notes, but the NCERT textbook remains the prescribed source for exercise questions and diagrams.
